This year, trends are clearly headed in the direction of deep, rich finishes with a luxurious appearance. This continues a long-time trend of richer, darker colors.

“In the 1990s, lighter woods with more texture became very trendy,” says Faith Allen senior product manager for Merillat. “Today, we’re seeing trends going even deeper and richer, crossing over into the truly dark black and brown look.”
      Merillat’s first offering, Sedona (right) is the perfect response to the new trends. Sedona is available on all Merillat Classic® Maple door styles.

“We selected Sedona because of the emerging trend of deep, rich hues,” states Paul Radoy, manager of design services. “Customers are looking for the elusive combination of trendy and timeless, and we carefully created this look to be love at first sight.”

Sedona would work well in nearly any home environment because of its ability to look highly upscale, with the flexibility of feeling approachable and comfortable.

Along with Sedona, Merillat Classic® now comes in an English Saddle glaze. Allen describes English Saddle as, “That rare combination of a deep finish with a subtle but striking touch of dimension.

“We believe that customers will see English Saddle as a straightforward way to create an ageless look that is also at the forefront of trends.”

English Saddle Glaze is available with Destination, Lariat, LaBelle and Somerton Hill styles.

Merillat is always careful to walk the balance between trendy and timeless.

“We never want to be reactive to the immediate needs of customers,” states Allen. “Instead, we are proactive, developing product that is perfectly aligned with consumer wants.”

On Sept. 18, Merillat expanded its Merillat Masterpiece line with various new finishes.

Recognizing the popularity of painted white finishes, Merillat will introduce three new variations of white finishes. All of the finishes will be available on Maple door styles and accessories:
      > Dove White is a pure white painted finish. It has a clean and cool look.

> Canvas is a soft white painted finish. Its comforting and inviting tone is infused with a hint of warmth.

> Biscotti is a painted finish with a warmer white tone. It has a whisper of brown for a look of antique parchment.

In addition to the white finishes, Merillat will introduce a new glaze finish, as glaze finishes continue to be very popular. The new Butter Rum Glaze is a praline finish with a warm brown glaze. It is natural, warm and inviting. (Pictured is the Butter Rum Glaze on Merillat Masterpiece Marietta Maple cabinets.)

This glaze finish has a touch of spice and offers a rich deep look that blends beautifully with granite and stone. Butter Rum Glaze will be available on all Merillat Masterpiece Maple door styles with the exception of Epic, Calais, Marsett and Montresano.

If you’re a parent, you know that children grow up faster than you expect. As fast as kids change, so do their needs, tastes and interests. This is one reason some parents are apprehensive about investing in quality décor for their children’s bedrooms.

Howver, Merillat designers set out to prove that a child’s bedroom can not only be beautiful, but it can also be versatile and enduring over time. So, calling upon their expertise, our designers used Merillat Masterpiece® cabinetry to create a beautiful bedroom that stands the test of time.

      “We wanted to design a bedroom that illustrates not only how cabinetry can be used to create high end furniture like pieces, but how it can be used to design a beautiful bedroom that can adapt for a child who’s 5 years old or 13 years old,” says Paul Radoy, manager of design services.

<img src="http://merillatnow.mbcgblogs.com/images/bedroom2.jpg" " style="float:right;margin-left:10px;margin-bottom:10px;" alt="" />

According to Radoy there are certain things to keep in mind when designing a bedroom that grows with the child:

1. It’s ok to make that initial investment. The upfront expense is a long-term investment, and the cost will be worth it down the road when there are only minimal changes that need to be made. Paint color, bedspreads, wall art and other accessories are easy to change as the child develops different tastes.

2. Avoid themes when it comes to furniture. Clean lines and neutral finishes have the ability to work with most any décor from whimsical to modern. A simple change to hardware can dramatically change the look of a furniture-like piece.

3. Always consider storage. A small child may not have the storage needs that a teenager would have, but it’s important to create storage space initially to accommodate the child’s needs for many years. Items created from Merillat cabinetry like a window seat, trunk, armoire, desk and books shelves are all storage spaces a child of any age can use.

4. Design for different zones in the bedroom. Like many rooms in the home, the bedroom serves a number of different purposes. Designing an area where the child can color, can adapt to a computer/homework desk for the child later on. A space where a child plays with their toys could also be a dressing area for a teenager.

“We also considered that in many households, a younger sibling may move into a bedroom when the older sibling moves out. Often times this sibling may be a different gender,” says Radoy.

“All of these rules apply in this instance as well. Smart design choices not only accommodate different ages - but different genders too.”

Merillat’s fresh contemporary option for the Merillat Classic® line is the new Fusion door. The Fusion door is a sleek, sophisticated contemporary-style door.

“Contemporary design is a growing trend,” says Faith Allen, senior product manager for Merillat. “This door style meets that trend, by appealing to the new generation of homebuyers who want something different than what their parents had. It also appeals to urban homeowners as it fits perfectly into lofts and condos.”

      Merillat Classic Fusion is a full overlay, one-piece slab style door. It is available in three finishes in Maple and two finishes in Cherry. (Pictured is Merillat Classic Fusion Maple Sable.)

This simple design lends itself perfectly to a variety of contemporary looks. Also, the door’s clean lines allow it to take on a number of styles with decorative hardware to achieve a whimsical to a more sophisticated elegant look.

“Whether used in the kitchen, bath or another room, the design possibilities are limitless,” says Allen.

The Merillat Classic Fusion door style was introduced Jan. 30, 2007.

Pantone®, a worldwide authority on color and provider of color systems, regularly surveys and reveals the latest color trends. Statistically, in the last few years color, ranked anywhere from 60% to 75% in a new product’s success. Today, this has risen to as high as 80% because consumers are much smarter and there is more information available to them.

<img src="http://merillatnow.mbcgblogs.com/images/coffeemaker.jpg" " style="float:left;margin-right:10px;margin-bottom:10px;" alt="" />

“The kitchen is absolutely the key place for color,” says Lee Eiseman, executive director for the Pantone Color Institute and director for the Eiseman Center for Color Information Training. “It’s the place where people gather and so it is the area that is more likely to have mixing and matching.

      “Even if a homeowner opted for white appliances, there is an inherent need for something colorful, whether it’s the bowls or the toaster.”

As far as the favorite color of the U.S. population, it’s still blue. It’s the psychological impact. It’s the color of the sky and blue says loyalty, dependability and forthrightness. It’s always going to be the leading color candidate for the majority of Americans.

In 2007, blue has a more diverse personality: from blue greens that pair well with browns to yellow-green, cobalt and turquoise.

<img src="http://merillatnow.mbcgblogs.com/images/pillow.jpg" " style="float:right;margin-left:10px;margin-bottom:10px;" alt="" />

Continuing into 2008, blue will be seen as the comeback family. Blues that focus on turquoise and teal will be new to the home market and are being used in everything from paint to accessories. In the classic arena, navy can’t be ignored. It looks fresh with a combination of white and it also comes in the form of a cobalt-China blue.

But, what about other trends in the color palette?

> Purple is being hailed as the big story for 2007. From soft orchids to deep blue purple, purple has won over the fashion community and is being called the hottest color this year.

> Red's big bold statement will still be around primarily due to Latin and Asian influences.

> Pink will become brighter and more towards a coral tint.

> Orange, the color of optimism is expected to overtake red this year, with shades of metallic copper tones, desert inspired adobe and terracotta.

> Yellow is North America’s neutral color and the gold tone of the 1980s is coming back. Metallic gold is back in.

> Brown will shift from mochas and chocolates, to earthen and mineral tones as it becomes the new black.

It is difficult for just one color to emerge as the ultimate hit of the season, but it is possible to indicate major directions. Merillat customers planning to redesign a showroom may want to consider these trends so the display, accessories and surroundings are in colors that have a longer life expectancy.

You can see how the colors you prefer impact your decorating style by taking Merillat’s “What’s My Style Quiz.”

Merillat Now showcases what is new, different and on the leading edge of design. All brought to you by America’s leading cabinet manufacturer, Merillat.

We want an on-going dialogue between our designers, product personnel and you – keeping you abreast of our innovations, new products and trends, our insider opinions, and interesting content that may influence us in the future.

And, as part of that dialogue, we need your feedback on the new products, designs, and any trends YOU see.

While some of the content will come from the Merillat Now! newsletter, other good information will come from Merillat design and product management personnel. To access all archives of the Merillat Now! newsletter, click here.
